We all know that we need a healthy and clean air for breathing. The task of cleaning up air and improving upon the quality and monitoring are not very difficult. For doing so, we have to take some steps that are necessary and observe some restraints. Some such steps and restraints are as follows:
  • Shift to using the less polluting forms of power generation, such as solar energy, wind energy, tidal and geothermal energy. Use of other forms of renewable energy may also be explored. The use of fossil fuels should be reduced to minimum. Smoke precipitators should be installed in all chimneys in factories and mills.
  • As far as possible, lead-free fuel, such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), should be used for running cars, buses and trucks. The vehicles should be subjected to stringent air pollution checks. Similarly, we should be vigilant about the polluting industrial units.
Some of the steps you can take as an individual or a group of individuals to improve upon the air quality around you are as follows:
  • Do not use bags made from plastics. Use only cloth and jute bags. Don’t burn dried leaves, branches of trees, paper and garbage in the open. Instead find ways and means for their safe disposal. For example, recycle the used paper.
  • Save electricity. In the long run, it will amount to burning less fossil fuels.
  • Reduce the use of aerosols (they are particles of solid or liquid matter that can remain suspended in air from a few minutes to many months depending on the particle size and their weight) such as perfumes, deodorant sprays, cosmetics and other similar sprays in your homes.
  • Grow more trees. They are nature’s lungs.
  • Advise your parents, neighbours and friends to use only unleaded petrol or CNG in their vehicles.
  • Do not smoke; be discreet towards those who are in your immediate neighbourhood.
Thus, all of us must take appropriate steps and observe restraints to contribute in keeping the air around us clean and healthy. We should remember that we share the air around us three hundred sixty five days in a year.
