The Internet is a network of networks. Internet is worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard IP (Internet Protocol). It consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as e-mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked web pages and other documents of the world wide web.

Internet is a Packet switched network. In a Packet switched network there is no single, unbroken connection between sender and receiver. Instead, when information is sent, it is broken into small Packets, sent over many different routes at the same time and then reassembled at the receiving end. Packet switching is used to optimize the use of the channel capacity available in a network, to minimize the transmission latency (i.e. the time it takes for data to pass across the network), and to increase robustness of communication.
Internet
Computers on the Internet may use one or all of the following Internet services:

  • Electronic mail (e-mail). Permits you to send and receive mail. Provides access to discussion groups.
  • Telnet or remote login. Permits your computer to log onto another computer and use it as if you were there.
  • FTP or File Transfer Protocol. Allows your computer to rapidly retrieve complex files intact from a remote computer and view or save them on your computer.
  • The World Wide Web (WWW or "the Web"). The largest, fastest growing activity on the Internet.
  • RSS readers, interpreting XML in a way analogous to how browsers interpret HTML.
