| Properties of Magnets |
We can draw the following conclusions from these three activities:- Magnets are substances that attract iron and not copper or aluminum. Those materials that are attracted by magnets are called magnetic materials. All substances can therefore be divided as magnetic materials and non–magnetic materials.
- Magnets, when suspended freely, always come to rest in the north–south direction of the earth.
- Magnets have two sides or poles – a north pole and a south pole. There are no poles in the middle portion in any of the magnets, poles exist only at the ends.
- North pole repels another north pole and similarly south pole repels another south pole. On the other hand, north–south poles attract each other.

| Instead of bar magnets, we can do all our activities mentioned above, using different types of magnets. Many types of permanent magnets are available easily in the market. |
